ATHENS, Greece (AP) — An Italian Coast Guard official says a Greek man died while trying to escape from a ferry that caught fire and is adrift in the Adriatic Sea. Two people were hurt -- one of them is the man's wife. The second injury was to a member of the Italian military involved in the rescue which is hampered by bad weather. The Italian Navy says 190 of the 478 people aboard the ferry have been evacuated.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — It's daylight and the air search for AirAsia Flight 8501 is resuming above the Java Sea. The Airbus A320-200 vanished early Sunday in airspace thick with dense storm clouds, strong winds and lightning. The jet was on its way to Singapore from Surabaya, Indonesia. Nearly all of the 162 people aboard the plane are Indonesians, including a number of children.

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) — An airline spokesman says a plane traveling from Toronto to Washington, D.C., this morning made an emergency landing in central Pennsylvania after the crew detected smoke on the flight deck and in the cabin. The Porter Airlines turboprop, with 66 passengers aboard, landed safely in Williamsport. Another plane picked up the passengers and flew them to D.C.

LOS OSOS, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a surfer at a Central California beach has survived an attack by a juvenile great white shark. A state park ranger says the man in his 50s sustained minor injuries from a bite on his right hip and was able to paddle himself to shore. The late morning attack happened at Sand Spit beach in the Montana De Oro State Park west of San Luis Obispo.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A pastor's wife says a hearse with a casket inside was stolen from outside a Southern California church on Saturday morning. The Los Angeles Times reports the hearse was idling outside Ebenezer Baptist Church in South Los Angeles before funeral services. The hearse was stopped four blocks from the church and returned.
