SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Zion National Park officials say an 18-wheel semitrailer got stuck in tunnel in the park Monday.
Authorities said in a statement Wednesday that the empty truck was headed from Kanab to Las Vegas close to midnight when it became wedged in the Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel about 600 feet from the exit.
Park staffers are investigating whether the tunnel's structure was damaged after the driver was cited for operating an oversized vehicle without traffic control service.
Zion spokeswoman Aly Baltrus says a tow truck operator freed the semi in a few hours by removing air from its hydraulics.
The driver told authorities his GPS led him along the route and he didn't notice warning signs about size restrictions.
The approximately 1-mile-long tunnel on southern Utah's Zion-Mount Carmel Highway was opened in 1930.
