WASHINGTON (AP) — A judge has dismissed a long-running lawsuit that led to federal oversight of the District of Columbia's special education services.
The class-action lawsuit was filed in 1997 and challenged the District over the way it handled hearings for parents who request services for their children. A federal monitor had been assigned to track the city's progress, but that ends with Tuesday's dismissal of the case. Another portion of the case was dismissed in 2011.
District leaders hailed the decision as a sign that their efforts to improve special education are paying off. Mayor Vincent Gray says the District is "serving as a model for special education reform."
In a separate case, a judge in 2012 ended oversight of the District's transportation services for special education students.
