NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Norfolk State has hired Virginia State's Latrell Scott as its football coach.
The announcement was made Tuesday by interim school President Eddie N. Moore Jr. and athletic director Marty L. Miller.
"He has a history of developing winning football programs and creating an environment of success for student-athletes," Miller said in a release announcing the hiring. "We think that he will elevate the Spartan football program to the next level."
Scott, 39, compiled a 19-4 record in two seasons with the Trojans, including a 15-0 record against Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association opponents. They were 10-3 this season and won their first outright CIAA championship since 1996 and the first NCAA Div. II playoff game in program history.
Scott has also been involved in some situations off the field.
His Virginia State squad would have played for the CIAA championship in 2013, but the game was cancelled after a brawl broke out at a championship luncheon between Scott's Trojans and Winston-Salem State players. After an investigation and the arrest of a Virginia State player, the CIAA declared Winston-Salem State the league champion and banned VSU from its anticipated participation in the NCAA playoffs.
Scott was the head coach at Richmond in 2010, but resigned prior to the following season after being arrested for driving while intoxicated. His lone Spiders team finished 6-5, and his overall record is 25-9 over three seasons.
He and has been an assistant coach at James Madison University (2012), Virginia (2009), Tennessee (2008), Richmond (2005-07), VMI (2002-04) and Western Carolina (2001).
Scott replaces Pete Adrian, who retired after 10 seasons.
