AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — The girlfriend of an Auburn University football player who was fatally shot says he was arguing with someone at a party when a third person opened fire.

Seventeen-year-old Ayanna Hughuley told The Associated Press that the third man "just started shooting" redshirted freshman Jakell Lenard Mitchell early Sunday at an off-campus apartment complex.

She said Mitchell fell on the ground, tried to get up and run, then fell again. She said the other man started shooting Mitchell again while he was on the ground.

The apartment complex where the shooting took place was the same one where two former football players and a third man were slain in 2012.

Auburn police on Sunday afternoon arrested 22-year-old Markale Deandra Hart of Camp Hill, Alabama, on murder charges.
