MACHIAS, Maine (AP) — The former head of Washington County Community College will serve as the interim president of the University of Maine at Machias.

University officials say Dr. Joyce Hedlund will take office Jan. 5 and serve until a president is identified. She spent almost 20 years as a president in the Maine Community College System, including stints leading Washington County Community College and Eastern Maine Community College. She is a president emeritus of both.

Chancellor James Page cited Hedlund's "ties to Downeast Maine, and her commitment to public service" as reasons for her selection.
