RENO, Nev. (AP) — Winds gusting to 140 mph through Sierra Nevada passes ahead of a powerful Pacific storm damaged homes and closed schools in the South Lake Tahoe area, and grounded commercial airline flights in Reno. The sheriff's office in California's El Dorado County says South Tahoe and Mount Tallac high schools and five other campuses are closed today due to a power outage. A blizzard warning runs through 4 a.m. Friday for elevations above 6,000 feet.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Professional poker player Dan Bilzerian is scheduled to appear in Las Vegas Justice Court on Jan. 9 to face two felony counts of possessing bomb-making materials. The criminal complaint ties Bilzerian to an investigation of an explosion in the remote desert near Vegas.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Members of the Culinary Union plan to deliver lumps of coal to a casino company as part of a long-running dispute over a unionization vote. The Christmas-themed protest is set for this evening at Red Rock Casino, which is also Station Casinos' headquarters. Station officials say they're fine with a vote, but the union won't agree to hold it secret-ballot style.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — UNLV has named Bishop Gorman High School coach Tony Sanchez as its head football coach, joining a small group of Division I schools to hire a head coach directly from the high school ranks. The 40-year-old Sanchez won a Nevada state title in each of his six years at Bishop Gorman, finishing his career 85-5, with no losses against another school from Nevada.
