KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Funeral services are planned in Kansas City Saturday for a Muslim teenager who was run down and killed in a crash that is being investigated as a possible hate crime. A man is in custody, charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. The teen's friends have said they had been alarmed in recent weeks by someone driving around with anti-Islamic messages painted on a vehicle.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Agents from the Department of Homeland Security who do border checks and screen passengers at airports would be exempt from expanded racial profiling guidelines being announced by the Obama administration. An official familiar with the plans say the guidelines will restrict the ability of the FBI and other law enforcement agencies to take into account religion, national origin and other characteristics during investigations.
MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The military is on full alert in the Philippines as a powerful typhoon rumbles toward the country's eastern coast. Haunted by Typhoon Haiyan's massive devastation last year, more than 600,000 people have fled Philippine villages. The latest storm is expected to hit Saturday morning. Forecasters say the storm is powerful and erratic.
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Outgoing Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is sounding a positive note after arriving in Afghanistan for his final visit. Hagel says he believes Afghans will successfully put down a surge in Taliban attacks in the capital and stabilize the nation. Hagel, on his fourth trip to Afghanistan as defense secretary, also says it should not be surprising that the Taliban are still able to launch significant attacks in the capital.
ISLAMABAD (AP) — A health official in Pakistan says four new polio cases have been detected in the country, bringing the number of children affected by the crippling disease this year to 276. The official says most of the cases came from the northwest, where local militants often target polio teams. He says authorities will launch a new three-day vaccination campaign Monday.
