AMHERST, Mass. (AP) — The University of Massachusetts-Amherst says a state senator from Barre will join the faculty of the Center for Public Policy and Administration next year.

The university says state Sen. Stephen Brewer, a UMass alumnus, will work as a professor of practice when he retires in January after a 26-year career in the Legislature.

The Democrat has chaired the Senate Ways and Means Committee since 2011. He also serves on the Senate Committee on Ethics and Rules and the Joint Committee on Ways and Means. He was elected to the House in 1988 and has served in the Senate since 1997.

UMass says Brewer will teach a graduate-level course on state budgeting and an undergraduate course on advocacy in state government.

Brewer earned degrees in history from UMass and Assumption College.
