SALT LAKE CITY — A 14-year-old girl was injured after being hit by a vehicle Wednesday night.

The accident occurred around 7 p.m. at Concord Street and 400 South, according to Salt Lake City police detective Greg Wilking. A 14-year-old was crossing Concord Street in the crosswalk with her friend when a vehicle heading westbound on 400 South hit her, Wilking said.

The friend was walking ahead of the teen and yelled, “Watch out for that car,” but the teen was hit, Wilking said. The 14-year-old was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with broken bones and abrasions, but no life-threatening injuries.

The driver was not cited during the accident, but Wilking said it is the law to stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk area. However, the area was not well-lit and Wilking said the driver may not have seen the teens.

“When you are crossing the street at night, assume that the vehicle can not see you,” he said. “Just because you are in a crosswalk does not mean they can see you and that they are going to stop for you. It never is a good idea to try and beat a car. You are better off just taking your time and waiting.”
