Officials: Person rescued from burning car in West Jordan

WEST JORDAN — A car accident Wednesday night resulted in a person being trapped inside a burning vehicle, police said.

Around 9:22 p.m., a call came into police indicating that a car had collided with a pole at 3400 W. 9000 South and was on fire. At one point the car was fully engulfed by flames, police said.

The fire was put out and the victim was extricated by about 9:45 p.m. The victim was taken to Jordan Valley Hospital in critical condition.

Police tweeted that the first officer on scene "climbed inside burning vehicle to render aid to trapped driver." The officer being treated for smoke inhalation.

Police also said that witness helped tamp down the fire during the rescue.

Westbound 9000 South will be shut down from 3200 West to Bangerter Highway for "quite a while," according to the West Jordan Valley Police Department. Motorists should use alternate routes if possible.

West Jordan's major accident squad has been called to the scene to investigate.
