SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Westminster College is creating The Great Salt Lake Institute.

The goal is to bring together researchers to keep an eye on environmental, economic and even social issues related to the lake.

An associate professor of biology, Bonnie Baxter, is the institute's director. She and others want to raise awareness of the lake.

The Great Salt Lake is a remnant of Lake Bonneville, an ancient lake that once covered 20,000 square miles of Utah, Nevada and Idaho.

One of the projects at the new institute will be to study whether lake algae could be turned into biofuel. Westminster is a small private college in Salt Lake City.
