When it comes to children, there are very few things parents won't do to see them succeed, especially where education is concerned. Sometimes that includes seeking additional help. This is what the team at Sylvan Learning Center has been doing for over 30 years.
Sylvan Learning Center provides educational assistance through individual tutoring. Carmen Robinson, local director of centers in Salt Lake and Sandy, says there's nothing like working with students in small groups and watching the light bulb go on as concepts become clear to them.
Sylvan is a core-based program, meaning it's accredited by Advanced, which accredits the public schools in the state. The curriculum is based on the Common Core. Students come to them for help with reading, math and homework support. They also do a study skills program which teaches older students how to get organized, how to use their planner and how to get their assignments in on time. Students range in age from four to 80 and are made up of those who want to improve academically or who just want to advance their reading or math skills. The main mission of Sylvan is guiding students to become more confident and successful in school.
Each child receives a personalized lesson plan derived from independent academic assessment, and teachers, all certified through the state, work with only three students at once, so the learning is customized for each student. Lesson plans at Sylvan Learning Center are loaded onto an iPad. This helps the student demonstrate they can manage the lesson skills themselves, and once that happens, they move on to the next skill.
Sylvan Learning Center also offers a comprehensive ACT Prep Course, with their critical difference being they have only seven students in a class. Students stay more engaged, learn faster and get help with specific concepts they may not understand. They can also take multiple practice ACT tests.
Carmen says Sylvan Learning Center is working to make learning fun. That means students who come to the center like to go there and are motivated to do better.
