SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker has become president of the National League of Cities. Becker, a former National Park Service employee, says he would like the organization to help connect kids to nature and the outdoors to reverse a trend known as "nature deficit disorder."
SOUTH JORDAN, Utah (AP) — An investigation is underway into the fatal shooting of a trespassing suspect by South Jordan police. Investigators say officers responded to a report of a trespassing Saturday afternoon and encountered the suspect in a nearby field during a search. They say the man was shot by an officer and was pronounced dead at the scene. The man's name and details about the shooting were not released.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A former Utah Transit Authority bus driver has been acquitted of charges stemming from a 2012 accident that killed a Salt Lake City business owner. Cheryl Anne Kidd had been charged in the 2012 death of Richard Wirick. The 82-year-old Wirick owned the Oxford Shop shoe store for six decades and was so well-known that some called him "Mr. Downtown." Kidd was fired by UTA a month after the accident.
CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP) — A Cedar City midwife has been ordered to stand trial on a felony manslaughter charge in the 2012 death of a premature baby. The Salt Lake Tribune reports Vicki Dawn Sorensen is charged with refusing to take a woman pregnant with premature twins to a hospital when she began to go into labor two months early. One of the twins born at Sorensen's birth center died. The mother was rushed to a hospital, where the second baby was born.
