WASHINGTON (AP) — Rihanna, Bruce Springsteen and Metallica wouldn't appear to have a lot in common musically, but they're sharing a stage on the National Mall tonight at a massive concert intended to raise awareness for issues affecting military veterans. There's been no official estimate of the crowd, but it's expected to total in the hundreds of thousands. The Concert for Valor is being staged by HBO, Starbucks and Chase Corp., and it's free. But organizers are directing fans to ways they can volunteer or donate money to causes helping war veterans.

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — Winter has not officially started. But that's little comfort to the people in the Upper Midwest and Rockies who woke up to frigid temperatures and a thick blanket of snow today. The highest snow totals are being reported from Michigan's Upper Peninsula, where more the 2 feet is on the ground. The National Weather Service says snow should taper in most of the region Wednesday, except for more lake-effect snow mostly over Michigan.

PUEBLO, Colo. (AP) — Colorado residents haven't had a lot snow to deal with as a massive storm system spreads across the middle of the country. But some have been shoveling tumbleweed, which have been piling up several feet high in and around Colorado Springs and Pueblo. The National Weather Service says winds gusted up to 60 mph as the storm moved in, also kicking up blinding dust for about an hour.

METHUEN, Mass. (AP) — Massachusetts school and police officials have unveiled a new system that can detect and track a gunman if one ever strikes a school. They held a demonstration in Methuen (mih-THOO'-uhn) Tuesday that simulated a gunman entering the building and opening fire. System sensors triggered alerts that reached police and school officials within seconds of dummy rounds being fired. The system then tracked the pretend-gunman through the building, sending alerts whenever he fired his weapon.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) — Former President George W. Bush says he and his father believe Jeb Bush should run for president. Bush says his younger brother has the support of the family but ultimately must make a decision regardless of family pressure. Bush's comments came during the official launch of his book about former President George H.W. Bush at his dad's presidential library center at Texas A&M University.
