(KSL News) Another growing group in Utah's prisons is illegal immigrants.

There are some 322 immigrants in Utah's prisons. About 260 are listed as undocumented immigrants, making up about five percent of the total prison population.

About half of all immigrant inmates were convicted of serious crimes like murder, rape and sexual assault. One third are behind bars for child sex offenses.

And it's costing Utahns.

Utah will spend about $6.7 million dollars this year to lock up criminals who are not U.S. citizens. The federal government will reimburse about five percent of that cost. The rest falls to tax payers.
