BERLIN (AP) — The Berlin Wall — the infamous landmark of separated Europe — fell Nov. 9, 1989 after dividing Communist East Berlin from capitalist West Berlin for more than 28 years.

Only a few sections of the more-than 160-kilometer (100-mile) long Wall remain standing where they once were — most other parts were torn down after Germany's reunification in 1990 and removed.

The photo gallery — consisting of 11 images — features the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Strasse with former watch towers over the so-called "death strip" of the border, and the East Side Gallery — the Wall's longest surviving stretch. The 1.3 kilometers (more than 4/5 mile) segment with its colorful murals is a tourist hotspot in today's Berlin.
