SALT LAKE CITY — Social media has become a place to share voting status and discuss political opinions, and with the midterm elections, social media platforms have responded.
Whether you shared a status encouraging friends to vote, telling your followers that you did so, or showing off the coveted “I Voted” sticker, social media has been alight with election-centric posts.
Election selfie
You probably saw several: Your friend’s normal selfie, with the addition of a conspicuous “I voted” sticker and maybe a thumbs-up. #ElectionSelfie trended throughout the day as people cast their votes and got the official sticker to prove it.
While some organizations have used it to encourage younger voters to get to the polls, Twitter has started tracking the hashtag #ElectionSelfie with an interactive graphic.
I voted
The #IVoted hashtag was popular among voters who maybe didn’t want to show their mug but wanted to let others know they voted or encourage others to vote.
An interactive map of the United States showed geotagged Tweets using the hashtag #IVoted or the words, “I Voted.” As voters across the nation woke up and headed to their polling locations, the map lit up.
FB voter info
Facebook users may have noticed a prompt to post whether or not they had voted. Once posted, the status also shared an interactive map into which people could put their address and pull up their polling location.
