SALT LAKE CITY — Tuesday night, police were looking for a man who fired into a crowd of people at a homeless shelter, injuring one and frightening others.

A man walked into a crowd of roughly 200 people gathered at 225 S. 500 West, just west of the Road Home shelter, around 7 p.m., pulled out a gun and fired more than one round, striking one man in the shoulder, according to Salt Lake detective Cody Lougy.

Witnesses said the man was wearing a gray coat with a hoodie underneath, gray pants and black tennis shoes. He ran west from the shelter, police said.

"It's good we only have one victim," he said.

The victim, a man in his 20s, was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. It is unclear whether the victim was homeless, although many in the crowd were likely waiting for beds at the shelter, according to Lougy.

Gunmen usually "target the person they're after," Lougy said, calling it rare that someone will fire randomly into a crowd.

"It definitely created some panic among those people," he said.

Anyone with information about the man or the incident is asked to call Salt Lake police at 801-799-3000.
