NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Performance is improving a bit for Louisiana students attending private schools with taxpayer-funded tuition vouchers.
But it trails performance of public schools, and state officials say 23 private schools performed so poorly that they will not be allowed to enroll new voucher students.
Figures released Monday showed 44 percent of voucher students scored "basic" or better on standardized tests for the 2013-2014 school year. That's up more than 2 percentage points from a year earlier. Statewide, 69 percent scored basic or better.
Twenty-three of the 125 participating private schools won't be allowed to accept new voucher students next year because they failed to meet performance standards.
Students from low- to moderate-income families can apply for private school tuition if they would otherwise be assigned to a poorly performing public school.
