PUTNEY, Vt. (AP) — The state is asking a judge to order the forfeiture of animals seized from a Vermont holiday-themed park over concerns about their health.
Earlier this year, the park's owner and caretaker were charged with animal cruelty after some animals were found dead on the grounds of Santa's Land in Putney. They have pleaded not guilty.
The Brattleboro Reformer reports (http://bit.ly/1rFYwW6) owner Lillian Billewicz is scheduled to appear in Windham Superior Court on Nov. 20 to answer to the state's request to release the 42 animals. The ponies, donkeys, peacocks, goats, deer and other animals are being cared for by individuals and nonprofit groups.
Windham County State's Attorney Tracy Kelly Shriver said the animals must remain in custodial care until a court orders their release.
