IVINS — The man believed to be the driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run had charges filed against him on Monday, police said.

The incident occurred on Oct. 21 on Old Highway 91 near the Kayenta community of Ivins, according to Santa Clara/Ivins Police Department public information officer Chad Holt. Steve Jed Canfield, 57, of St. George, was biking on the highway when he was hit by a passing pickup truck, Holt said. Canfield was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders around 8 p.m.

The driver left the scene of the accident, but contacted police later that evening, Holt said. Police identified the driver as Gary Fairse, 33, of Mesquite, Nevada. Investigators were waiting for toxicology reports, but charges were filed Monday afternoon.

“He’s being charged through a summons because he lives out-of-state,” Holt said. “And (the investigation) took longer because he lives out-of-state.”

Fairse will be charged in connection with an accident involving death, Holt said.
