LIVINGSTON, La. (AP) — The Livingston Parish School Board has moved closer to issuing $25 million in bonds to pay for improvements at schools in Walker.

The Advocate reported (http://bit.ly/1omN7zL) that school district voters in May approved an increase in property taxes to pay for a variety of projects, including vocation and technical program improvements at Walker High School.

School Board member Jimmy Watson said most of the money would be directed toward the high school.

Proceeds from the bond sale would be used to construct a building with about 32 classrooms, administrative offices and a library at Walker High.

The school also would get a new cafeteria, band room and athletic facilities. The school's track and football field also would be improved.

Another new building would house Walker High's growing vocational program. This year, the school began courses in plumbing, mechanical instruction in heating and air conditioning equipment, and heavy equipment operation, Watson said. There are also plans to begin teaching robotics and electrical training next year.

The new facility would provide space for those programs as well as existing courses in welding, carpentry, television production and small engine repair.

The board expects sale of the bonds to begin Nov. 20.

The additional property taxes voted in May would be used to pay off the bonds over a period of 20 years.
