LONDON (AP) — One of the top musicians of the late 1960s has died. Jack Bruce, the lead vocalist and bass player of the power trio Cream, died today at his home in England, according to his family and publicist said. He was 71. The trio that also included guitarist Eric Clapton and drummer Ginger Baker is widely cited as the original supergroup. Bruce wrote most of Cream's hits, including "Sunshine of Your Love" and "White Room."
WASHINGTON (AP) — The federal government is recognizing gay marriage in six more states. Attorney General Eric Holder says same-sex couples will now qualify for a range of federal benefits, including Social Security and veterans' benefits, in Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, North Carolina, West Virginia and Wyoming. The Justice Department also has determined that it can legally recognize gay marriages performed this summer in Indiana and Wisconsin, despite confusion about the status of the law there.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Two suspects are being held without bail following a series of shootings that left two Northern California sheriff's deputies dead, another wounded and a bystander in the hospital. Yesterday's shootings covered six crime scenes scattered across 30 miles. Authorities say a 34-year-old man is being held in the Sacramento County Jail on suspicion of murder, attempted murder and carjacking and a woman who was with him is being held on suspicion of attempted murder and carjacking.
MARYSVILLE, Wash. (AP) — Authorities say they've recovered the gun that's believed to have been used in yesterday's shootings at a high school in Washington state. And a spokesman for the Seattle Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives says the agency has determined who was "the most recent purchaser of the gun." Authorities say a student at the school killed a girl and wounded six other students before taking his own life.
LUSAKA, Zambia (AP) — Police say at least 26 people have died, most of them children, when a ferry capsized in the southern African country of Zambia. The children were traveling to another school across Lake Kariba, in the south of the country, where they were meant to participate in Zambia's 50th independence day celebrations. Authorities say the accident was caused by overloading.
