CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — The Medical University of South Carolina Hospital is preparing to restart its heart transplant program after a temporary suspension.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported the program had been suspended in May after months of poor patient outcomes and at least one death.
Executive director Dr. Pat Cawley said the hospital has identified things that can be improved, especially in post-surgical care.
Cawley told the school's board Thursday that the hospital will begin seeing heart transplant candidates soon and may resume surgeries in February or March.
Cawley said the hospital has continued to perform pediatric heart transplants.
MUSC is the only hospital in the state with a heart transplant program. Patients who were awaiting surgery were transferred to other states.
