SALT LAKE CITY — Police arrested a man after he allegedly attempted to kidnap a boy from his father.
Just before 12:30 p.m. Saturday, a man and his 4-year-old son were walking to their car in the area of 200 South and Rio Grande Street in Salt Lake City. The boy was riding piggyback on his father’s back when a man, Sathan Douongseng, 44, approached them, claiming the child was his, Salt Lake City police said.
Douongseng displayed a knife, grabbed the child and began running away, but the father pulled the boy back to him without difficulty, Salt Lake police Sgt. Robin Heiden said. Douongseng fled from the scene and the father called police, providing a description of him.
“Just a really weird situation. We don’t know why he tried to take the child or why the child was his,” Heiden said.
Police located Douongseng a short time later in Pioneer Park and arrested him without incident, Heiden said. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of aggravated kidnapping.
