PROVO — A fire caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage to a house near 2800 West and 1400 North Saturday afternoon. Ironically, the men called to fight the blaze were trained by the man who owns the home.

According to Provo Fire and Rescue Deputy Chief Tom Augustus, the house belongs to a battalion chief from his department.

"This is his shift. He would normally be working, (but) he had the day off today," Augustus said. "These are his guys that responded to help one of their own."

When firefighters arrived, they could see smoke and flames coming from the roof. Investigators said it appears the fire started on the second floor, but they don't yet know how it started.

Most of the second story was destroyed, and damage to the home is estimated to be somewhere between $300,000 and $400,000.

A couple of firefighters were taken to the hospital as a precaution after being exposed to elevated carbon monoxide levels.

No one living inside the home was there at the time of the fire.
