GUNNISON — A 19-year-old inmate was found dead in his cell Thursday evening at the Central Utah Correctional Facility.
Brock Tucker was discovered by an officer distributing medication around 6:15 p.m., according to Utah Department of Corrections spokeswoman Brooke Adams. Tucker was discovered unresponsive in his cell and officers administered CPR. He was pronounced dead at 7:14 p.m., officials said.
The death was being investigated as a suicide, Adams said. The circumstances surrounding Tucker’s death remain under investigation, but an initial review shows the prison followed proper procedures prior to the death.
Tucker was convicted of two counts of assault by a prisoner and was placed on felony probation in April 2012. He was incarcerated in September 2012 after violating probation. While in prison, Tucker was convicted of charges of theft, attempted theft by receiving stolen property and failure to stop at the command of a police officer.
The Sanpete County Sheriff’s Office is handling the case, which will remain active pending an autopsy by the state Medical Examiner’s Office.
