IRVING, Texas (AP) — West Virginia's Juwan Staten has been named the Big 12 basketball preseason player of the year in a vote by the league's coaches.

Joining Staten on the all-Big 12 team released Thursday are Perry Ellis of Kansas, Georges Niang of Iowa State, Marcus Foster of Kansas State and Buddy Hield of Oklahoma. Staten and Ellis were unanimous selections.

UNLV transfer Bryce Dejean-Jones of Iowa State was named the top newcomer. Cliff Alexander of Kansas and Myles Turner of Texas share preseason freshman of the year honors.

Staten led the league a year ago with a scoring average of 18.1 points per game.
