Marquez edges Pedrosa for pole at Aragon MotoGP

ALCANIZ, Spain (AP) — MotoGP leader Marc Marquez edged Honda teammate Dani Pedrosa to take pole position with a record qualifying time at the Aragon Grand Prix on Saturday.

The defending champion broke his own pole record from last season by setting the fastest lap of 1 minute, 47.187 seconds at the 5-kilometer (3.15-mile) MotorLand Aragon circuit.

It was Marquez's 11th pole of the season in 14 events, and 20th of his career.

Pedrosa will start Sunday's race from second place, followed by Andrea Iannone in third.

Yamaha pair Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo clocked the sixth and seventh fastest times respectively.

Marquez has won 11 of the 13 races this season. He has 289 points, followed by Pedrosa with 215 and Rossi with 214 with five races to go.

Spaniards also dominated qualifying in the lower categories to the delight of the home fans.

Maverick Vinales won pole in the Moto2 category, followed by Johann Zarco and Mika Kallio. Points leader Esteve Rabat will start from fifth.

In Moto3, Alex Rins won his fourth pole position of the season ahead of Danny Kent and Juanfran Guevara. Points leader Jack Miller will start from fourth place.
