BEIRUT (AP) — U.S. coalition-led warplanes have struck militants attacking a Syrian town near the Turkish border for the first time Saturday, according to a Kurdish official and activists. A spokesman for Syria's Kurdish Democratic Union Party says the strikes targeted Islamic State positions near the northern town of Kobani, also known as Ayn Arab. The town has been under attack by jihadis for days. Activists say other airstrikes today hit positions in eastern Syria, including wheat silos.
LONDON (AP) — Britain's Ministry of Defense says warplanes have taken off for their first combat mission over Iraq since Parliament approved airstrikes targeting the Islamic state group. The Tornado GR4 aircraft took off from a Royal Air Force base on Cyprus, hours after Britain joined the U.S.-led coalition of nations that are launching airstrikes against the extremists. The Ministry of Defense says that the Tornados "are now ready to be used in an attack role as and when appropriate targets are identified."
UNDATED (AP) — Police say the man accused of ambushing two Pennsylvania state troopers, killing one, spent years preparing for his mission, including ways to avoid arrest. Authorities say information from a computer hard drive used by Eric Frein (freen) shows the suspect did Internet research on how to avoid police manhunts and on law enforcement technology and survival skills. Authorities believe they have Frein contained within a 5-square-mile perimeter around his parents' northeast Pennsylvania home.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee authorities say 13 teenagers escaped overnight from a youth detention center in Nashville but all but one were recaptured within hours. The Tennessee Department of Children's Services the teens overpowered a guard last night, taking his keys to open a door and let the others out of the Woodland Hills Youth Development Center. The statement says all but one 16-year-old were found and taken to a juvenile court detention center.
DENVER (AP) — Democrats say former President Bill Clinton has bowed out of a scheduled appearance in Colorado following the birth of his granddaughter. Clinton was to speak at a Denver fundraiser today for Sen. Mark Udall. Gov. John Hickenlooper was also scheduled to be at the event. Both Democrats are locked in tight re-election battles with their Republican challengers. Clinton's daughter, Chelsea, gave birth last night to her first child, a daughter named Charlotte.
