Iraq's prime minister says his country's intelligence operation has uncovered the plot. But the U.S. official says the plot was never brought up in meetings with Iraqi officials this week in New York.

GALVESTON, Texas (AP) — Authorities believe a fugitive who's charged with abducting a University of Virginia student may have been trying to flee to Mexico. The suspect, Jesse Matthew, had a brief court hearing today by video link from a jail in Galveston County, Texas, where he was arrested on a beach yesterday. It's about a seven-hour drive from the Mexican border.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Missouri police chief whose officer fatally shot an unarmed 18-year-old last month has released a video apologizing to the family, saying Michael Brown's body remained on the street for too long after he was killed. Their attorney says the family hadn't heard about the video but would review it.

By the end of the year, up to 30 states could have an average gasoline price of under $3 a gallon, according to a forecast from GasBuddy.com. Already the average in Springfield, Missouri is below $3. Several other cities are on the brink.

MILAN (AP) — City officials in Venice will be closing a walkway near the picturesque Grand Canal for at least two hours on Monday. It's part of an effort to keep crowds away from George Clooney's wedding to human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin (AH'-muhl ah-luh-muh-DEEN'). The walkways are used to access the Cavalli Palace. It's used for civil marriage ceremonies, and has rooms overlooking the Grand Canal and the famed Rialto Bridge.
