CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose announced Tuesday he is donating $1 million to city's After School Matters program for city's economically disadvantaged teenagers.
Rose, in announcing the donation at the organization's 2014 Annual Gala, said in a statement that having people who believe in your potential "can make all the difference in the world."
Rose, who grew up in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood, said many people invested in him and he "wants to do the same for Chicago's teens."
After School Matters was founded more than two decades ago by the late Maggie Daley, wife of former Mayor Richard M. Daley. Since then, it has served more than 200,000 teens. Chicago-based Ariel Investments president Mellody Hobson became head of the program upon Maggie Daley's death in 2012.
