SELDEN, N.Y. (AP) — A lawsuit accuses Long Island's Suffolk County Community College of misspending hundreds of thousands of dollars in student fees intended for extracurricular activities.
Robert Weinstein, an accounting professor at the school, and his son-in-law Craig Zerolla who worked for the athletics department for two years, filed the suit.
According to Newsday (http://nwsdy.li/1yobO2D ), the suit charges the college association with improperly using the fee "to pay expenses which should be funded through the ... (college) operating budget."
It says only a small percent of each student's fee went to intramural sports and each club received an annual budget of just $450.
A college spokesman says "every dollar goes to benefit students."
Weinstein has worked for the college for 38 years and was part of a 2012 audit team reviewing the fees.
