CANADENSIS, Pa. (AP) — It's a daunting task but authorities in Pennsylvania are combing a heavily wooded region of northeastern Pennsylvania for the suspect in last week's deadly ambush at a state police barracks. They say they're taking "extreme precautionary measures" as they search for 31-year-old Eric Frein, a self-taught survivalist with a grudge against law enforcement.

MADERA, Calif. (AP) — A manhunt is underway in central California for five inmates who escaped from a correctional facility. The men broke out of the Madera County jail late Friday night. They were being held on various charges including attempted murder and armed robbery. Authorities say all five men should be considered armed and dangerous.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — The search for a missing University of Virginia student is continuing in Charlottesville. Nearly 1,000 volunteers joined the effort today. Hannah Graham disappeared a week ago. Police say they're keeping an eye on a man they believe was with the 18-year-old in a bar on the night she went missing, but have stopped short of calling him a suspect.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A White House spokesman says President Barack Obama has full confidence in the Secret Service despite two incidents at the executive mansion in the last 24 hours. The head of the Secret Service has ordered stepped-up security outside the White House and a review of procedures after a man scaled the fence last night and made it inside the building before being apprehended.

BEIRUT (AP) — Hundreds of Kurdish fighters are crossing into Syria from Turkey to defend a Kurdish area under attack by Islamic State militants. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and local Kurdish officials say the fighters are streaming into the Kobani area in northern Syria where militants have seized villages and forced thousands of Kurds to flee.
