The Pirates, who've won four straight games, own a three and a-half-game lead over the Brewers and have a magic number of seven to clinch a playoff berth.
TOKYO (AP) — Second-seeded Caroline Wozniacki (wohz-nee-AK'-ee) of Denmark has reached the Pan Pacific Open semifinals by beating eighth-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain 6-3, 6-3 today in Tokyo. The U.S. Open finalist will face Garbine Muguruza (GAHR'-been-yuh MOO'-guh-roo-sah) of Spain on Saturday.
WUHAN, China (AP) — Two-time Grand Slam champion Li Na (lee nah) is retiring from competitive tennis at age 32, citing a recurring knee problem. Li became the first player from China to win a Grand Slam singles title when she took the 2011 French Open and she captured the Australian Open title in January.
SINGAPORE (AP) — Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso set the fastest time in the opening practice session for the Singapore Grand Prix, upstaging Mercedes pair Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg today. Qualifying is Saturday for Sunday's race.
