MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Hours after reversing course and benching Adrian Peterson indefinitely, Minnesota Vikings owner Zygi (ZIHG'-ee) Wilf says the team "made a mistake" in bringing back its superstar following his indictment on a felony child-abuse charge in Texas. The organization put Peterson on the exempt-commissioner's permission list, meaning he is off the active roster while he deals with his legal affairs. General manager Rick Spielman would not put a timeframe on when Peterson might be back.
NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL finally will have HGH testing, perhaps as early as the end of this month. This weekend, the new performance-enhancing-drug policy the league and players' union agreed to today will allow the Broncos' Wes Welker and two other suspended players to return to the field. Welker, Dallas Cowboys defensive back Orlando Scandrick and St. Louis Rams wide receiver Stedman Bailey had been suspended for four games. All can return Sunday under the new rules.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida State's Jameis (JAYM'-ihs) Winston has been benched for the first half of Saturday's game against Clemson after making "offensive and vulgar" comments about women. School officials say that the quarterback will undergo internal discipline. Several students tweeted Winston stood on campus yesterday and shouted a lascivious comment about female anatomy that may have derived from an Internet meme.
NEW YORK (AP) — Umpire Joe West was suspended for one game without pay for grabbing the jersey of Philadelphia Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon. Major League Baseball executive Joe Torre says in a statement that West "admitted that there was a better way to handle the situation." Papelbon was suspended seven games and fined Monday for making a lewd gesture and then bumping West.
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — A North Korean female gymnast has been banned and stripped of all her results since 2006 in a case of age cheating. The International Gymnastics Federation says the North Korean team "is blamed for submitting a fake passport for Cha Yong Hwa." It's the third time FIG has punished North Korea for falsifying ages. Gymnasts must be 16 at major events.
