MONTREAL (AP) — The Montreal Canadiens will play with four alternate captains this season: defensemen Andrei Markov and P.K. Subban and forwards Tomas Plekanec and Max Pacioretty.
Last season's captain, Brian Gionta, signed with the Buffalo Sabres in the offseason. His successor was a subject of debate among fans and media.
General manager Marc Bergevin said Monday he wanted this matter settled before training camp. He also wants to ease Subban and Pacioretty, the team's top younger stars, into leadership roles. A decision on whether to appoint a full-time captain will be made next summer.
Only three of the players will wear the captain's C at any time, with Markov and Plekanec to have it every game.
