ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Secretary of State John Kerry has been campaigning for allies in the battle against the Islamic State militant group, but a couple of Middle Eastern countries are not welcome. France is ready to play a substantial role, including with airstrikes. But it's also suggesting Iran be invited to an international conference on helping Iraq to be held Monday in Paris. Kerry says that would be inappropriate, given the differences Tehran has with the West, including its support for Syrian President Bashar Assad.
SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Officials have ordered people in about 30 homes to evacuate as a wildfire roars through a canyon in Southern California's Cleveland National Forest. Fire officials say the flames have been burning uphill all day, but they're concerned that a down-canyon wind could spring up after sunset pushing the fire toward homes at the bottom of the canyon. While winds have been light until now, temperatures have been hot. Forecasters say they could hit 102 tomorrow.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Another NFL star is in trouble for alleged abuse. Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has been indicted in Texas on a charge of child abuse after using a branch to spank his son. The team has benched Peterson for this weekend's game against New England. His lawyer says Peterson is cooperating with authorities.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The NFL estimates that nearly 30 percent of former players will develop debilitating brain conditions, and that they will be stricken earlier and twice as often as the general population. The disclosure comes in data the league has prepared for its proposed $765 million settlement of thousands of concussion lawsuits. Both the league and players' lawyers estimate about 6,000 retired players will develop Alzheimer's disease, moderate dementia or more serious neurological problems.
DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — The World Health Organization is reporting another outbreak of Ebola. This one is thought to have killed 35 people and sickened more than 60 in Congo. The WHO says it's unrelated to the outbreak in West Africa that's now blamed for the deaths of more than 2,200 people.
