PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) — A South African judge has declared Oscar Pistorius not guilty of murder and premeditated murder in the shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. The double-amputee Olympic runner was convicted today of the lesser charge of culpable homicide, or negligent killing. The sentence can range from a suspended sentence and a fine to up to 15 years in prison. Sentencing will come at a later date.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A memorial service is scheduled today in Mississippi for five children allegedly slain by their father. Some 500 miles away in South Carolina, Timothy Ray Jones Jr. is scheduled to make his first court appearance. He is accused of killing his three boys and two girls in South Carolina, wrapping their bodies in separate trash bags and dumping them on a rural hilltop in Alabama.

BLACKSTONE, Mass. (AP) — Arraignment is scheduled for today in Massachusetts for a woman arrested at a house where police found the bodies of three infants amid vermin and soiled diapers. Four other children had been removed by authorities last month from the house in Blackstone, about 50 miles southwest of Boston. Erika Murray faces charges related to the living conditions as well as intimidation of a witness.

ALBANY, Ga. (AP) — A trial over a deadly salmonella outbreak five years ago is wrapping up in Georgia. Defense attorneys plan closing statements today in the federal court trial of a Georgia peanut plant owner and two others. Prosecutors made their closing arguments yesterday. They say former Peanut Corporation owner Stewart Parnell and his co-defendants shipped contaminated peanuts and peanut butter and faked lab tests. Nine people died in the outbreak.

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — In raising the threat level today, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott stressed that it "does not mean that a terror attack is imminent." The Australian government has raised its terrorism threat level to high, the second-highest warning, in response to the domestic threat posed by Islamic State movement supporters.
