CINCINNATI (AP) — The Democratic candidate for governor says he supports the legalization of medical marijuana.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports (http://cin.ci/1snvhvy ) Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald says he supports the use of medical marijuana under a doctor's supervision, breaking from nearly all Republicans and many Democrats in the state who have been hesitant to endorse it.

FitzGerald told the newspaper Wednesday that people many suffer from conditions medical marijuana could help alleviate, and to deny them the drug shows a lack of compassion.

Republican Gov. John Kasich (KAY'-sik) has said he opposes legalizing medical marijuana because the medical community remains reticent on the issue.

The announcement from FitzGerald follows a series of political missteps, high-level campaign departures and lackluster fundraising last month.
