PROVO — An Orem man charged with kidnapping and raping an 11-year-old girl as she walked to elementary school earlier this year has been ordered to stand trial.
Jayson Quade Johnson, 26, appeared in a preliminary hearing in 4th District Court on Monday, where a judge determined there was enough evidence against him to bind him over for trial. A scheduling hearing has been set for Sept. 22.
Investigators say Johnson stopped the 11-year-old girl on Feb. 5 as she walked to Cherry Hill Elementary, 250 E. 600 South in Orem, and he told her she needed to take a different route. He pushed her down the street to a church parking lot where he sexually assaulted her, according to the charges. Johnson then allegedly put the girl in a Dumpster, raped her, and told her not to tell anyone.
The girl immediately told a teacher upon arriving at school. DNA evidence led police to Johnson.
Johnson was charged in June with child kidnapping, sodomy on a child and aggravated sexual abuse of a child, all first-degree felonies. An additional charge of tampering with a witness, a third-degree felony, was filed last week.
