CAIRO (AP) — President Barack Obama is to meet with congressional leaders on Tuesday before he addresses the American public the next day to outline his plan to stop militants from the group Islamic State. Meanwhile, the head of the Arab League is urging its members to confront Islamic State extremists "militarily and politically." Such backing could provide crucial support across the Middle East for Obama's effort to assemble an international coalition against militants who've conquered a swath of Iraq and Syria.
LOS CABOS, Mexico (AP) — A weakening Tropical Storm Norbert is swirling off Mexico's Baja California peninsula and forecasters say it should become a tropical depression on Monday. But the storm is expected to bring more rains to the Baja desert and to the U.S. Southwest as it curls back toward land in the coming days. On Sunday, thunderstorms pushed by Norbert brought rain to inland parts of Southern California, flooding streets and freeway lanes that left dozens of cars stuck in the knee-deep water.
CHICAGO (AP) — Federal researchers are wondering if the rise in childhood thyroid and kidney cancers is related to the rise in obesity in children. Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say the increase in such cancers from 2000 to 2009 is relatively small. But they say studies showing increases in both kinds of cancers in adults have suggested causes might include rising obesity rates, and they're wondering if the same is possible in children. The study is in Monday's Pediatrics.
CHICAGO (AP) — A new study says improved patient safety may be helping reduce the number of dangerous infections very sick children can sometimes contract while in the hospital. Researchers at Vanderbilt University looked at 174 hospitals in 39 states. The say between 2007 and 2009, infections spread through breathing machines and intravenous catheters dropped significantly. Infections can sometimes be transmitted when health care workers don't properly wash their hands or through other lax hygiene practices.
CUPERTINO, Calif. (AP) — A six-year-old boy is listed in fair condition in a Northern California hospital after being attacked by a mountain lion. Authorities say the animal began dragging the boy away before his father and another man fought it off. The attack happened Sunday afternoon on a hiking trail in an open space preserve in Cupertino. Authorities say the boy sustained bite wounds and scratches to his head and neck.
