KENT, Ohio (AP) — Jay Jones raced 23 yards inside the final 2 minutes to score his second touchdown as South Alabama fended off Kent State 23-13 on Saturday.

Jones finished with 102 yards rushing and Brandon Bridge passed for 161 yards and a TD as the Jaguars opened their season with a win on the road.

Kent State (0-2) spotted the Jaguars a 16-0 lead, but pulled to within 16-13 when Colin Reardon hit Casey Pierce with a 44-yarder to open the fourth quarter. The TD capped an 80-yard drive. After forcing a three-and-out, the Golden Flashes drove deep again on their next possession, but Anthony Melchiori missed a 32-yard field goal attempt from the left hash.

Reardon passed for 213 yards and two touchdowns, but was sacked for a safety and intercepted late. The Golden Flashes lost on a last-second field goal in their opener against Ohio.
