DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) — American Pharoah won the $300,000 Del Mar Futurity for 2-year-olds by 4 3/4 lengths on closing day at Del Mar on Wednesday, giving Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert a record 12th victory in the Grade 1 race.

Ridden by Victor Espinoza, American Pharoah ran seven furlongs on Polytrack in 1:21.48, the fastest Futurity since Declan's Moon was timed in 1:21.29 in 2004.

American Pharoah paid $8.40, $5.80 and $4 for his first career victory, He joined Go West Young Man in 1977 as the only previous non-winners to take the race.

Calculator returned $11.60 and $5.40 at 15-1 odds, while Iron Fist was another 8 1/4 lengths back in third and paid $3.80 to show. Skyway, the 2-1 favorite, finished fourth in the field of nine.

American Pharoah, fifth Aug. 9 in his only other race, earned $180,000.
