DETROIT (AP) — A judge has sentenced a suburban Detroit man to 17 years in prison for killing an unarmed woman on his porch. Theodore Wafer was sentenced today for the second-degree murder of Renisha McBride. Before sentencing, the 55-year-old Dearborn Heights man told the young woman's parents he was sorry for what happened during the early morning hours of Nov. 2. During trial, he said he shot the 19-year-old because he feared for his life, but a jury rejected Wafer's claim of self-defense.
TALLINN, Estonia (AP) — There are some harsh words for Russia today from President Barack Obama. Speaking in Estonia after meetings with Baltic leaders, Obama said Russia's aggression in Ukraine is a threat to peace in Europe. He declared in blunt terms that Russian forces who have moved into Ukraine in recent weeks aren't on a humanitarian or peacekeeping mission -- but instead are "Russian combat forces with Russian weapons in Russian tanks."
BAGHDAD (AP) — A human rights group says militants from the Islamic State group carried out a mass killing of hundreds of Iraqi soldiers who were captured when the extremists overran a military base north of Baghdad in June. Human Rights Watch says new evidence indicates the Islamic State fighters killed as many as 770 men who were captured at the base near the city of Tikrit.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — One of North Carolina's longest-serving death row inmates has been freed from prison, a day after a judge overturned his conviction in a 1983 rape and murder because of new DNA evidence in the case. Fifty-year-old Henry McCollum walked out of Central Prison in Raleigh today. He hugged his mother and thanked God for his release. His half brother, 46-year-old Leon Brown, also had his conviction in the case overturned yesterday. He's expected to be freed later today.
WILLINGBORO, N.J. (AP) — President Barack Obama's name will not replace John F. Kennedy's on a building owned by a New Jersey town after all. Willingboro's township council has voted 5-0 to reverse its decision to rename the recreation center. The vote followed an outcry from those opposed to the change, including alumni of the high school that once occupied the building. It's now owned by the township, used as a recreation center and undergoing renovations.
