INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The NFL has suspended Colts owner Jim Irsay for six games and fined him $500,000 after his guilty plea today in suburban Indianapolis to one count of driving while intoxicated. Irsay was put on probation for a year by the court and required to undergo drug testing for a year. Irsay was stopped in March.
HOUSTON (AP) — A person with knowledge of the deal tells The Associated Press that star defensive end J.J. Watt has agreed to terms on a contract extension with the Houston Texans. Multiple media reports said the agreement is for six years and $100 million, with $51.8 million guaranteed and a $10 million signing bonus.
UNDATED (AP) — Florida State, Alabama, Oregon and Oklahoma held on to the top four spots in this week's AP college football poll, although the Crimson Tide lost 44 points after beating West Virginia. Texas A&M soared 12 spots to No. 9 after beating then ninth-ranked Clemson 52-28. The Gamecocks dropped to No. 21 this week.
BILBAO, Spain (AP) — The U.S. national team got 21 points from Anthony Davis on the way to an easy 98-71 win over New Zealand at the Basketball World Cup. Kenneth Faried (fehr-EED') chipped in with 15 points and 11 rebounds to help the American team improve to 3-0 in group play.
NEW YORK (AP) — Serena and Venus Williams have been knocked out of the doubles competition at the U.S. Open by Russia's Ekaterna Makarova (ma-kah-ROH'-vuh) and Elena Vesnina (vehs-NEE'-nuh) 7-6, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Serena, who is top seed and still alive in singles, had to take a medical timeout during the match for a problem with her right foot.
