KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine says it's now facing the task of waging war with the Russian army, and not just the pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine. That statement comes as a spokesman for Ukraine's National Security Council says Russian military forces have been spotted in both of the major cities in eastern Ukraine that are in rebel hands.

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — A member of the Somali Islamic extremist group al-Shabab says its leader was traveling in one of two vehicles that were hit last night in a U.S. military strike. But the spokesman would not say if the leader was among the six militants who were killed. The group is the one that attacked an upscale mall in Nairobi, Kenya, a year ago, killing at least 67 people.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are mixed as traders return from a three-day holiday weekend. Stocks overseas have been mostly higher as investors await central bank meetings later this week in Europe and Japan, as well as Friday's U.S. unemployment report for August. Investor confidence over the U.S. economy has risen following several months of strong growth in hiring and corporate profits and a series of major corporate acquisitions.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — The Revel Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey, has closed its doors, a little more than two years after opening with high hopes of turning around Atlantic City's struggling casino market. The pre-dawn shutdown of the casino today followed yesterday's closure of the hotel. By mid-September, four of Atlantic City's 12 casinos will have closed, but none will be a costlier failure than Revel. It started construction just before the Great Recession hit and had to take on so much debt it never could turn a profit.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Chris Brown has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault in Washington, where he was accused of punching a man who tried to join a picture the singer was taking with two women outside a hotel. Brown was sentenced today to time served. He had been in jail for two days in the case. Brown had previously acknowledged to a judge in Los Angeles that he had violated probation by committing a crime in Washington. He had been on probation for a 2009 attack on the singer Rihanna, his girlfriend at the time.
