EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — New York Giants middle linebacker Jon Beason hopes to play in the regular-season opener despite missing all of training camp with a foot injury.
Beason practiced for the first time Monday and felt good enough to believe he can have a role against the Lions in Detroit on Monday night.
He says he is "trying to prove why I need to be out there."
Beason has been out since sustaining a ligament tear and a small fracture to the sesamoid during an organized team activity in June. While the injury did not require surgery, it forced the Giants to place their second-leading tackler last season on the physically unable to perform list in training camp. He passed his physical over the weekend.
Veteran Jameel McClain, signed in the offseason as a free agent, moved from strong side linebacker to the middle with Beason out.
