NEW YORK (AP) — Serena Williams has reached a grand slam quarterfinal for the first time this year after beating Estonia's Kaia Kanepi (KY'-ah KAH'-neh-pee) 6-3, 6-3 at the U.S. Open. The top-seeded Williams next takes on Italy's Flavia Pennetta, who scored a straight set win in her fourth round match.
NEW YORK (AP) — Top-seeded Novak Djokovic (NOH'-vak JOH'-kuh-vich) made just 19 unforced errors on the way to a 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 win over Philipp Kohlschreiber at the U.S. Open. Djokovic reaches the quarterfinals for the eighth year in a row — and 22nd consecutive Grand Slam tournament overall.
ATLANTA (AP) — Philadelphia's Cole Hamels has been pulled from the game after pitching six innings of no-hit ball against Atlanta. He struck out seven, walked five, hit a batter and threw 108 pitches. Hamels left for a pinch-hitter in the seventh.
HOUSTON (AP) — Bo Porter has been fired as Houston Astros manager with the team mired 25 games out of first place in the AL West with the second worst record in the league. Porter was in his second year on the job after going 51-111 last season. Tom Lawless takes over as skipper through the end of the season.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Carolina quarterback Cam Newton has returned to the practice field wearing an oversized flak jacket designed to protect fractured ribs. It was Newton's first practice since Aug. 22 when he had his ribs stepped on during a preseason game against New England.
